I just tried it (/u/gcg/ngrap/bin/sgi/geomview) on ~njt/misc/flattorus.off.
The Z direction seems to be the torus' axis: flying straight forward shows
nothing, but steering to the side shows that we're surrounded by some sort
of tube.  Flying in the X-Y plane, we repeatedly pass through the walls of the
tube.  X-Y translation acts reasonable too, if you choose something like the
world as the center object.  It's harder to tell what's happening if you
translate with the torus itself as both target and center, which is
the default setting.

Also tried hdodec.off, a dodecahedron whose vertices lie within the unit
sphere; flying through it acts as you'd expect in spherical space.

How does this compare with what you see?
