Begin forwarded message: Date: Thu, 28 Jan 93 15:56:28 -0800 From: bryson at nas.nasa.gov (Steve T. Bryson) To: gunn at geom Subject: VR symposium CFP: please distribute and post ********** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ********** IEEE Symposium on Research Frontiers in Virtual Reality Monday October 25 - Tuesday October 26, 1993 Red Lion Inn, San Jose, CA Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Graphics and in cooperation with ACM SIGGRAPH. Held as part of IEEE Visualization '93. Virtual reality refers to the use of three-dimensional displays and interaction devices to explore real-time computer-generated environments. The IEEE Symposium on Research Frontiers in Virtual Reality is a forum dedicated to exploring current issues and defining future directions in virtual reality research. Symposium activities will range from formal technical presentations to open discussion sessions. Researchers in the field of virtual reality, including developers of virtual reality applications, are invited to submit long papers, short papers, position statements, and panel proposals on all aspects of the field, including, but not limited to: - display and interaction hardware including tracking, gesture recognition, and graphics/audio/force/tactile displays - software architectures - interaction techniques - environment design - human factors - applications to visualization - other applications Long papers should be about 6000 words in length (or the equivalent of eight pages, including figures, if formatted in double-column proceedings style) and involve a scholarly, substantive discussion of a research problem in either virtual reality or the application of virtual reality techniques. The paper should describe research in progress. Short papers should be about 3000 words in length and provide a forum for statement of results or observations that may be too brief for a long paper or are in a preliminary form. Position statements should be short, provocative statements, about 3000 words in length, addressing interesting virtual reality research topics from a broad perspective. These statements should be technical in nature, with a clear description of the background and reasons for the position taken. Panel proposals should be at most 3000 words in length and should make clear the potential for lively debate on a topic of interest to the research community. Each submission should include an abstract and the affiliations, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and email addresses of all authors (or, in the case of panels, all participants). One author should be clearly indicated as the contact author. If a presentation will include videotape, one copy of an NTSC VHS tape may be optionally included with the submission. Send six copies of each submission to: Steve Bryson MS T045-1 NASA Ames Research Center Moffett Field, CA 94035-1000 All submissions must be received by March 31, 1993, and no fax or email submissions will be accepted. (Initial submissions do not have to be laid out in double-column format.) Notification of acceptance will be provided by May 17, 1993, and camera-ready copy of accepted papers will be due on July 1, 1993 (tentative). Co-Chairs: Steve Bryson, CSC/NASA Ames Research Center Steve Feiner, Columbia University Program Committee: Dov Adelstein (NASA Ames Research Center) Mark Bolas (Fake Space Labs) Kellogg Booth (University of British Columbia) William Bricken (University of Washington) Carolina Cruz-Neira (University of Illinois, Chicago) Nathaniel Durlach (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Wolfgang Felger (Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics) Henry Fuchs (UNC, Chapel Hill) Mark Green (University of Alberta) Randy Pausch (University of Virginia) Tom Piantanida (SRI International) Larry Rosenblum (Office of Naval Research) Larry Stark (University of California, Berkeley) Susumu Tachi (University of Tokyo) Andries van Dam (Brown University) Elizabeth Wenzel (NASA Ames Research Center) David Zeltzer (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) For further information, contact Steve Bryson, preferably by email (bryson at nas.nasa.gov), or by phone (415-604-4524).
