To view objects in stereo, try the "Stereo" external module -- it may do just what you want. If you'd like to tinker with that program, its source is included in the pub/software/geomview/geomview-src.tar.Z source distribution. Geomview's built-in stereo commands handle only the portion of the work that an external module can't, dealing with positioning windows on the screen and drawing each view twice under the altered views. The Stereo module does the interesting part, examining the viewing geometry and constructing viewing (shear) matrices for each eye. If you're interested in more detail on those, let me know.
