A (slim) possibility: does the system you're running it on have a file
called "/etc/resolv.conf" but no file called "/usr/etc/resolv.conf"?
This file is used for looking up hostnames. Irix 4, where that geomview
executable was compiled, has its libraries assuming it's in /usr/etc,
but Irix 5 puts it in /etc. If you can get a root user to
  ln -s /etc/resolv.conf /usr/etc/resolv.conf
that might make a difference.

Alternatively, you could fetch the geomview source and compile it there;
or, you could try fetching priv/slevy/Geomview-irix5.tar.gz from geom.umn.edu,
and extracting it from the directory containing "Geomview" (e.g.
from /usr/local if geomview is installed under /usr/local/Geomview).
It contains a batch of geomview-related executables compiled under irix 5.
