You can pick up
   priv/slevy/world.vect.900.gz
from geom.umn.edu.  This VECT object has land/water and political
boundaries (though it only marks boundaries, not distinguishing land
from water).  The data is extracted from the public-domain
"CIA World Data Bank II map database".  The "900" in this file means that
the boundaries were sampled at 900-arc-second (about 20 mile) resolution.


As for a general survey -- lots of people have told us about interesting
stuff they've done, but we don't have a summary set up for public view.
That's a good idea, though.
