[ REQ 5837]: Question on Geomview/Can you get surface area measurements from shapes constructed within Geomview?

Message from Fredrik.Stendahl at vo.slu.se follows:

Sirs.

I have the last week trying to find a solution to a practical problem.
I wonder if Geomview cuold be this solution.

I am an agronomist, and to make a long story short, I have to estimate
the surface area of some seeds. For round seeds this is no
problem. Standard formulas can be used as good aproximations.
The problem comes when to estimate the surface of a wheat kernel
I have been looking at some of the 3D packeges available for the Macintosh
but there seems to be no built in capabilities to get a value
of the surface area of the modelled object.

Since the Institution of Crop Production Science at the
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, where I work,
host facilities to run Linux on some hardware, I have come to
wonder if Geomview has the capabilities I am looking for.

Would it be possible to, in Geomview, construct a shape corresponding
to a wheat kernel, and extract either values of the surface area
or a formula by which the area could be calculated?

Yours Sincerely

Fredrik Stendahl
