It sounds as though you do see a way to construct a digital model of
the seed -- is that true? Geomview would be of little help in constructing
such a model (though it could be used to display it). It also can't
directly measure the area. However, if you can make a digital model of a
seed surface by some other means, and can induce that program to write out
a list of vertex coordinates of (say) triangles forming the surface,
it's easy to write a program to compute the area of each triangle and add
them up. (Given a triangle with vertices given by vectors p, q, and r, its
area is 1/2 of the magnitude of the vector cross-product (p-r) cross (q-r).)

One other thought -- have you considered what it means for a seed to have
a surface area? The area could be well-defined if the seed's surface is
smooth, but if it's bumpy, the answer would depend a great deal on the
size of the smallest bumps you consider. That might in turn depend on
why you care about the area.

Hope this is some help

  Stuart
