Re: [Closed REQ 6049]: geomView installation problems

The binaries for the Geomview 1.5 Sun distribution were compiled under
SunOS 4.x rather than Solaris. This seems to be OK when displaying on the
local machine (DISPLAY environment variable set to ":0" or "unix:0" or similar),
but when it refers to another machine e.g. an X terminal, you see the effect
of an incompatibility between SunOS 4.x and Solaris libraries -- it can't
use the normal Solaris mechanisms for translating host names into network
addresses.

A workaround: you could try specifying the numeric address of your X terminal
rather than its name in the DISPLAY environment variable, e.g.
setenv DISPLAY 128.101.25.35:0	(or whatever it is)

But, there's a better solution. Could you try picking up a new copy of the
geomview distribution? There's a new one, still in beta but nearly final,
which includes binaries compiled under Solaris 2.4, at

   ftp://geom.umn.edu/priv/slevy/geomview-161b8-solaris.tar.gz

This one includes many new features and modules, too.

If you try it, please let us know how it works.
