[ REQ 6061]: bit planes on SX dipsplay on Linux

I wanted to run geomview on a linux machine here in Urbana.
But it seems to have a 16-bit display by default, and geomview
can't deal. Does anyone know how I go about getting it to
use an 8-bit or 24-bit display so that geomview will run?
Or is there any way to get a version of geomview that can
use 16 bits?

Thanks for any help,
John
