The "hvectext" perl script, included with the geomview 1.6.1 distribution,
would do the job but not easily. I've written another script which uses
hvectext and does produce such labels pretty conveniently. You can pick up

   ftp://geom.umn.edu/priv/slevy/subtext

You'll also need the Ghostscript Hershey fonts, available by FTP from
ftp.cs.wisc.edu under /pub/ghost/aladdin (or /pub/ghost/gnu)
as probably any of the files beginning with "ghostscript-fonts-other".

It can produce something like your example with:

   subtext -at 0 0 0 -plane xy -s .25 -align sw -bold I -sub -symbol x

where the "-at", "-plane", and "-s" options are the same as the defaults,
and "-align sw" means to align the lower left ("southwest") corner of the I
at the point (0,0,0). "-bold" and "-symbol" select particular fonts,
and "-sub" renders the following piece of text as a subscript.
