Thanks.  Indeed, though the message doesn't say so, the 8-bit display
is expected to be PseudoColor.  Assuming you've got geomview 1.6.1,
there's another geomview executable to try; the other will run more slowly
than the default one would have (if it had worked!), but it should 
accommodate your display.  Try using

  geomview -opengl  ...

This invokes .../Geomview/bin/x11/gvx.OGL, which is linked with the Mesa
Open-GL-like library.

You could make this the default by editing the "geomview" shell script,
or by renaming bin/x11/gvx.OGL to simply gvx, or (for you personally) by
setting the environment variable GEOMVIEW_GVX to point to the gvx.OGL version.
