Your program does work if you use an OFF or MESH instead of an nSKEL
object. The nSKEL code was intended for higher-dimensional
visualization, and some of the standard features (like picking)
weren't ever implemented. 

Since you're doing terrain visualization you should be able to use one
of the standard 3D formats like OFF or MESH without any loss in
functionality.

It's our bug. We should try to get that documented.
