[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] [Update to REQ 5064]: question re geomview
Jean, Unfortunately I think the answer to this is that there is no good way to do it. The SGI version of Geomview doesn't work over the net --- it has to be run on the local machine. I have seen instances where it seems to almost work -- the windows appear and some things work, but other things don't work. I believe we would have to rewrite the GL part of the code to use "distributed GL" in order for it to work, and even then I'm not sure if the FORMS interface would behave properly. I've forwarded your question to the "software@geom.umn.edu" alias, in case Stuart or someone else knows a way to make it work properly. The only way I know to really run Geomview corrrectly over the net be to use the X windows version, which runs much slower than the SGI version. The best solution to your problem, I think, would be to have Geomview installed on each machine that your students need to use; the installation can be trimmed back to take up only about 2 MB, by cutting out all the external modules and example data files. If you want to do that let me know and I'll explain how. --Mark PS to "software@geom" readers: I'm not sure if this reponse will go to Jean directly, since I'm actually the one who sent in her original message, so I'll send her a separate copy after sending this.
