Hi Craig,

  Right, the problem with that particular X server is that the only visual
it provides is of class "STATIC". What does this mean? Well, mostly it
means that the X server has locked in a set of 256 colors (8 bits) and
there is no way for Geomview to change these colors. If you are going
to run Geomview, you will really need an 8 bit "pseudocolor" visual. This
would let Geomview allocate a smooth distribution of colors so that it
can properly dither from 24 -> 8 bit. Perhaps there is some way to
configure your particular X-server to provide a pseudocolor visual but
I can't guarantee it. Check out any docs you have on your version of X11 :-)
