Hi Thomas,

  There is a "patch" for 16bit X linux users. Just grab:

ftp://ftp.geom.umn.edu/priv/daeron/bin/gvx.linux.gz

gunzip this file and use it as a drop in replacement for your
"gvx" binary in $GEOMROOT/bin/linux/gvx. This should be able
to work in 16 bit mode quite nicely.
