As you noticed, the geomview binaries we distribute were compiled under Irix 4.
They generally work well under both Irix 4 and Irix 5; however, the
Indigo Impact seems to break compatibility with old executables.
You can pick up, by anonymous FTP from geom.umn.edu,
        priv/slevy/Geomview-irix5.tar.gz
which contains executables for geomview compiled under Irix 5.
The tar package is intended to be installed from the directory above
"Geomview"; extracting it overwrites all the relevant executables in place.
For example, if you'd installed the geomview package as /usr/local/Geomview:
   cd /usr/local
   gzip -d -c whatever/Geomview-irix5.tar.gz | tar xvfop -

(Use "gzip ... | tar tvf -" to see what will be overwritten without actually
changing anything.)

Also, Impact graphics are a native implementation of Open GL;
geomview uses old-style GL, which is emulated, and runs quite slowly.
You might try using a beta version of geomview which uses Open GL, and
(on the Impact) runs quite fast. An executable for that is available as
        priv/slevy/gvx.OGL.gz
This is just a compressed executable, not a tar package; you might install it
with
        cd /usr/local/Geomview/bin/sgi
mv gvx gvx.old (Save the previous version)
        gzip -d -c whatever/gvx.OGL.gz > gvx
        chmod +x gvx
