It is clear that your system only supports 16 bit display depths which geomview, in the currently released form, does not support. However, there is a binary we distribute for linux that will fix that problem. You can download it from: ftp://ftp.geom.umn.edu/priv/daeron/bin/gvx.linux.gz Just uncompress this and use it as a drop in replacement for your currently installed "gvx" binary.
