On the Iris Indigo and later machines, it's true, things will work with
any number of bit planes. But on the Personal Iris, if you have only 8 bit
planes, Iris GL doesn't allow drawing in full color (RGBmode), which geomview
needs. (8-bit Indigos look ugly in RGBmode, but they do work.)

It would be possible to compile geomview to use its own built-in X-windows
renderer rather than depending on GL. It would be slow, but should work.
You can pick up a replacement executable for geomview from geom.umn.edu as
  priv/slevy/gvx-sgi.X11.gz

This is just a gzipped Irix 4 executable, not a tar file. So you might say:
  gzip -d gvx-sgi.X11.gz
  cp gvx-sgi.X11 /usr/local/Geomview/bin/sgi/gvx

assuming you'd installed geomview under /usr/local/Geomview.
The point is to replace the bin/sgi/gvx binary with the new one (possibly after
saving the old gvx binary in case you have another iris at hand).
