Yes, the Impact machines (at least the early software releases) seem to run old-style Iris GL very slowly -- if you run "top", you'll see that the "dgld" daemon is spending huge amounts of time. We just bought a new machine with ("Solid") Impact graphics, which does run GL quite speedily; I think there are patches available which improve graphic performance. At any rate, you can fetch the following files from geom.umn.edu: priv/slevy/Geomview-irix5.tar.gz This is a gzipped tar package, with binaries for geomview and its GL FORMS modules, compiled for Irix 5. Should work on both the Impact and Power Challenge machine. Extract from the directory above that where Geomview was installed (e.g. "cd /usr/local; gzip -dc Geomview-irix5.tar.gz | tar xvfop -" if geomview lives in /usr/local/Geomview). It overwrites the relevant binaries. priv/slevy/gvx.OGL.gz Geomview for Open GL. This runs a good deal faster on Impact machines, which were designed for Open GL. It probably runs acceptably on the Power Challenge, too, but may well be no faster than the GL version included in the Geomview-irix5.tar.gz package above. This is just a compressed executable, not a tar file. After decompressing and chmod +x'ing, put it in .../Geomview/bin/sgi/gvx (or, for testing, leave it elsewhere and ``setenv GEOMVIEW_GVX full_pathname_of_gvx'' before running geomview).
