I believe it's fixed; this began happening when we upgraded to the latest
version of sendmail, which is much more finicky about when it's willing to
write to files, and which doesn't document the rules it uses.
I've just been changing log files to be owned by daemon, and mail-list
files (which refer to other files) to be owned by root, which seems unnecessary
but sufficient.  Let me know if you get another bounce.
