There's a simple command-line vector text generator in perl available at
   ftp://ftp.geom.umn.edu/priv/slevy/hvectext.pl
It uses Hershey fonts as distributed with Ghostscript; the script itself
contains the Hershey-Plain-Simplex font.

There's also the (SGI-specific) Labeler, which requires Display Postscript
to be installed on the Iris where you run it, and produces nice polygonal text.
You have to manually scale the text down to the appropriate size.
