There's a non-SGI-specific command-line program included with geomview 1.6.1,
called "hvectext". It requires that perl be installed, and for
non-default fonts, you'll also need ghostscript (or at least ghostscript
fonts). It produces vector text. Here's the usage message:

Usage: hvectext [-w totallength] [-s textheight] [-plane xy|xz|yz] [-at X Y Z]
	[-hershey fontfile.gsf] [-align n|s|e|w|ne|nw|se|sw|c] [--] text string

Generate geomview/OOGL vector-text object, of given height or total length
(default -s .25), aligning the given corner of the text
(default -align c (centered)) at given point (default -at 0 0 0).
Accepts Ghostscript Hershey fonts; built-in default is Hershey-Plain-Simplex.

Another script (built on top of hvectext), a bit handier to use,
deals with sub- and super-scripts and multiple fonts, is available from
  ftp://geom.umn.edu/priv/slevy/subtext

Here's its usage message:

Usage: subtext [-plane xy] [-size s] [-align c] [-at X Y Z] [-sub] [-sup]
[-greek] [-symbol] [-bold] [-hershey font.gsf] [-text text] text ...
Invokes hvectext to convert a series of text strings into geomview/OOGL
vector text in 3-D, using Hershey fonts supplied in Ghostscript form.
Each text string is a single argument, and may be followed by other
options to change font, sub/superscript, etc.
Use "-text" to always interpret the following argument as text,
necessary if it would begin with "-".

Subscripting, superscripting, and alignment, apply only to the immediately
following piece of text; other options apply to all following pieces of text.
The "-symbol" font hrsy_r has the usual map (x->xi q->theta) of Latin->Greek;
the "-greek" font (hrgk_c)'s alphabet maps a..x to alpha..omega in order.

Hope these are useful.
