It has to do with OpenGL, as you suggested.  Try using

	geomview-opengl-irix5.tar.Z

from ftp.geom.umn.edu://pub/software/geomview.  This is a distribution
that was compiled with the OpenGL library.  (Your machine probably
runs Irix 6, and the above was compiled with Irix 5, but that
shouldn't matter.)
