Alas, yes, Geomview does need to be able to attach to some X display
just to initialize its user interface, even if it's never displayed.
This could be changed, but it's a bit awkward.  Depending how your
X server is set up, this may or may not be a problem.  The X servers
on our machines allow connections from localhost, even if no one is
logged in.  If you use xdm, I think you can tell it not to "grabServer",
which it does by default.

Also, I'm told there's a software-only X server which just simulates a
display in a memory buffer without using any graphics hardware.  It's
supposedly an optionally-compilable part of the X server tree in the
X11 sources.  If you can't get anything better, it'd probably work.
